Hello again, Runner!
We know it has been almost a month since the start of our Xodó Challenge, the first challenge of 2022 where we decided to run for the children of Brazil!
As we know, Brazil has experienced many economic and social problems and we are here together to help this country and its people. Here are some facts about Brazil’s Indigenous and Quilombo communities so that you can understand why it is so important to support this cause:
- Poor access to health care and prevalence of respiratory or other chronic diseases made Indigenous and Quilombola communities particularly vulnerable to the Covid-19 situation.
- These groups have their economic activities and lifestyles directly affected by the pandemic. The lack of access to their own territories makes it difficult for many to plant food, which is their main source of income. The weakening of human rights policies in recent years is another factor that contributes to the greater vulnerability of these communities.
- In order to survive, many residents need to go to the city to maintain their income or seek health services, as many communities lack this type of care. They have also been facing difficulties in requesting emergency financial aid from the federal government, as the requests must be made online.
- Children are confronted on a daily basis with problems relating to health, food, access to water and education. Child labour still exists and remains a concern.
Our mission during this challenge is to help ACONERUQ and to donate goods to the Quilombola communities of the state of Maranhão in 23 municipalities. The Quilombola movement is recognized as one of the most active agents of the black movement in Brazil and introduces a debate that seeks to strengthen the perspective that this country has a great ethnic plurality.
There are many families in a bad economic situation and a state of vulnerability, due to the worsening and long duration of the pandemic, and that is why Run4aChild chose ACONERUQ to help.
We hope that you have learned a little more about the problems and difficulties that the children and the people of Maranhão in Brazil are facing so that you can continue to help us and stay motivated in this challenge and in future challenges!
