Then one day, my friend Jaki (@minty.giirl) mentioned that she found out about running and walking challenges that helped some amazing causes and truly made a difference in people’s lives. So, I asked her to send me the link and from there, I was added to a group of runners and walkers and I walked my way to finish the 80km necessary for the Kanimambo Challenge and most recently the 30km for the Asha Challenge.

You are our first international Runner in the Spotlight! How do you push yourself so far to reach the goals even while you are in a different continent to your team?

I am really excited to be the first international runner in the spotlight! If it’s a big challenge like the Kanimambo which was 80km, I normally make a plan of how many miles/kilometres I need to do in a day/week in order to finish it on time. Living in London, has taught me that the weather can be unpredictable, so it’s always better to go for a walk when you can, instead of delaying it for another day, and then on that day you can’t go because it’s raining. Additionally, I like to think that I am helping others and that I am part of something bigger and those are big motivators.

Do you think Run4aChild has a positive impact on your life?

Absolutely! It has kept me motivated to go out and clock those miles when I felt like staying in and not doing anything. The pandemic has changed our lives and since everything was closed during lockdown in London, I feel like these Run4aChild challenges have pushed me and so many others to do more outdoors activities, and when you have people counting on you, you just need to go out and do it, you cannot let them down.

Were there any changes in your lifestyle thanks to your continuous participation?

Yes, I was definitely a couch potato before the pandemic and then I found out that going out for a walk was quite nice and refreshing. Once I found out about the challenges, I just included the challenges in my routine, so I could complete them in a timely manner and I will definitely keep an eye out for the next challenges.

What is your biggest motivation to run/walk?

To keep myself active and healthy.

What tips can you share to people that are about to start running?

I think it’s important to know the route you will take, so start by running/walking in an area that you know well, so you are less likely to find surprises on the pavement such as unevenness or if a certain street is too busy. Also, STRETCH! I cannot emphasise that enough, get your legs and body warmed up and stretch before and after your run/walk as it will help you feel less sore.

Can you share your running routines? For example, at what time do you prefer to run?

I normally go in the afternoon when its less busy, that way I can avoid the rush hour and just do the speed that my body can do, instead of feeling rushed by other runners and walkers that are faster than me.

Which types of places do you prefer to run?

I normally go for a walk along the river following the Thames Path near to where I live or some other park that is full of trees and flowers. I like to feel that I can escape the city on my walks by going to places where there is a lot of nature. Luckily, London has plenty to offer in terms of parks and walking paths.

Will you join us in the future challenge? What would you like to see in our next challenge?

Of course! I love the initiative and I definitely would like to continue to be a part of it and help change lives for the better. I think that each one of us that participates likes to think that we are helping others, but in fact, these challenges are helping us to get through many things such as: to make healthier choices, deal with anxiety, be in contact with nature more often and to become more active, and so on.
