Now that summer is here, we have the perfect conditions to go on a vacation run! Running on the beach challenges your body in a different way than running on solid ground. But keep in mind that running in the sand is not easy, however, try to enjoy the view and those beach kms.
We brought you 4 great benefits of running on the beach:
- The sand is soft and gives way when you push off. In order to be able to run powerfully on the sand, your body develops a smooth and efficient running technique with a mid-foot strike and a stable push-off;
- The muscles of your feet and legs have to work much harder than usual. This helps your body to develop a natural and very efficient running form while working your core;
- Running on the beach is a real fat burner, which means you burn more calories than usual, which is generally known as the after-burn effect;
- Due to the higher demands on your muscles, coordination and stability, your body tires more quickly when running on sand. Therefore, it is a good idea to start off with shorter workouts. This allows your body to recover more effectively and it adds more value to the time you spend running.
In addition, here are a few tips to keep in mind when beginning to beach run:
- Run on wet sand;
- When you first begin running in sand, wear shoes and then gradually work up to running barefoot;
- Wear lots of sunscreen;
- Watch closely for sharp objects such as rocks, seashells, metal and glass in your path especially when running barefoot;
- Hydrate and carry water on you, especially if its very hot;
- Listen to your body, always.
